Why were there so few women nurses during World War II?

During World War II, the scarcity of women in nursing roles can be attributed to several historical, societal, and cultural factors. Firstly, traditional gender roles prevalent at the time often confined women to domestic spheres, limiting their participation in professions outside the home. Nursing was perceived as an extension of caregiving responsibilities traditionally associated with women, but societal expectations restricted their involvement in more public roles, including wartime nursing.
